New injectable and oral products for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) are reshaping what prevention can look like. Gilead Sciences’ twice-yearly subcutaneous injectable, Lenacapavir, is already being introduced across Africa now,1 with generic versions expected to reach markets in early 2027. A low-cost, monthly oral PrEP product is expected from MSD and partners in subsequent years.
Today, equitable access to testing and PrEP remains a critical challenge2 and public-sector delivery models alone are unlikely to reach the full at-risk population. For many, stigma and discrimination create barriers to access that private, demedicalized channels (such as pharmacies, accredited drug shops, direct-to-consumer platforms) are well positioned to address.
However, how to engage demedicalized channels for product introduction and sustainable scale is poorly understood. The anticipated introduction of generic lenacapavir in 2027 presents a critical opportunity to identify scalable, sustainable and inclusive delivery models.
Salient Advisory is working with several stakeholders to identify and validate private sector approaches most likely to achieve broad, equitable reach for clinical services, prescription refills, pick-ups and more – with a focus on Nigeria and Uganda.
Between May and November this work will draw on primary consumer and provider research, stakeholder engagement across regulatory and implementing partners, and landscape analysis of existing private-sector HIV service delivery channels. Outputs will include:
- Delivery model recommendations for private sector lenacapavir introduction in Nigeria and Uganda, grounded in evidence on consumer preferences, provider capacity, and market dynamics.
- Stakeholder engagement materials to support adoption of recommended delivery approaches across government, implementing partners, and private-sector actors.
